Fly Free Shinji

Rest peacefully, Prince Shinji
July 17, 2013--The woman promoting the adoption of the shelter's diabetic cats let us know of Shinji's passing.

She wrote "Today is a day of too little too late. Finally got offer for foster for Shinji the diabetic cat at Indep shelter and told shelter staff but was just told he apparently crashed today and was euthanized. I have no other details on that. Damnit!!! I'm so sorry sweet boy. I tried to find you help. I'm so sorry you never got in a home again and your last months were in a strange place. You deserved better. :( "

July 10, 2013--Shinji is still looking for a forever home and heart.

May 25, 2013--This handsome little man is a courtesy post for a diabetic-friendly shelter group in Independence, MO.

Shinji is a handsome DSH buff and white neutered boy that has had a rough time with his diabetes. His shelter vet estimated that he is 9 years old. He weighs about nine pounds. He is FIV/FeLV negative.

Shinji’s owner brought him to the no-kill shelter with some canned DM food and a vial of Lantus insulin that had been opened and used for 14 months (which means that the two units once daily of insulin that Shinji was getting likely wasn’t doing much to control his blood glucose). There are no vet records available from the former owner.

Shinji was not happy to be turned into the shelter, and he let the shelter staff know that by being uncooperative at intake. He had ketones the next day and was sent to an outside vet clinic and received treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). After a couple of days at the vet clinic he became uncooperative with that staff and was returned to the shelter where he could have an exam room as his private boudoir. The shelter says “We will try to get him into a cat savvy foster home. He is a lot of "talk" and grumbles while seemingly enjoying petting. I think he’s just sad.”

Shinji continues on Lantus insulin and DM canned food. We are told he is doing well and is currently regulated. He has moderate to severe dental disease (many missing teeth and gingivitis).

To inquire about Shinji, please contact Great Plains SPCA. Shinji is in this group’s Independence MO facility. His ID number is A19826984.

Shinji is available for a long-distance adoption and the shelter or Cats of Independence Animal Shelter will provide a transporter in their local/regional area.
