May 19, 2013- I received a text message from Belle's foster mom that Belle passed away this morning. Apparently she had a tumor that just got too big. "It was her time to go but she had a fantastic run". RIP Belle.~JennF
***************************************
December 7, 2012--"Santa Belle". Not only does Belle walk on a leash, but she likes to dress up too! She was Wonder Woman for Halloween. Now she just needs to find a furever home. She is currently in a non-DCIN foster home. For more information please contact Sabrina at bostoncats@optimum.net.
*******************************************************************************
September 3, 2012---Belle's foster mom contacted DCIN to let us know she has pancreatitis. It was confirmed with a PLI test and Belle was sent home after a day at the vet. She is currently eating WD canned food and is on 2-3u of insulin for now. Luckily, Belle's caregiver works in a vets office and was able to treat Belle immediately.
*****************************************************************************
July 17, 2012--Belle's foster mom went on vacation and had to board Belle in the vet's office where she works. Belle was not happy about that but is slowing forgiving her foster mom and even napped on her lap the other day for the first time. She is now getting between 5-7 units of insulin and her BG's are now in the 200's or lower. Belle is all personality.
*********************************************************************************
May 14, 2012--Belle has been going to Petco in Paramus, NJ on Sundays for adoption events. Her Petco "fan club" reported she looks much better and was much friendlier. Her BG has been lower however she is still on a huge dose of insulin and is not being tested regularly. She now has her very own Guardian Angel. One of her "fans" has offered to help with the cost of insulin if that is a reason someone would decline to adopt her.
*******************************************************************************
April 20, 2012-- Belle has been venturing out more and even found the cat toy box. Her BG's are still in the 300's and she is still getting between 7-8 units of insulin. Her foster Mom is hoping to get her dose lower soon. She is still eating wet food and rarely gets any kibble. Her foster Mom is returning to work and Belle will have to stay in a separate room while she is at work. Belle is getting along better with the other cats in the home but because they eat dry food Belle can't be out with them during the day.
********************************************
April 2, 2012--Belle is really warming up to her foster home. She is becoming much more friendly and even venturing out and laying around on the furniture. She is currently on between 7 -8 units of Lantus BID. She is eating wet food but will occasionally get a kibble from the dry food the other cats in the home are eating. She is still getting 1/4 tab. of Prozac. Her foster mom states "I am lucky that she has gotten into a routine, she puts herself in her condo at nite for bed".
****************************************************************************
March 23, 2012--Belle is now safe in a temporary foster home. She has been put on Prozac to calm her down as there are 3 other cats in the household she does not really like . However, Belle is making progress with the others. She was out for over an hour with the other cats while they were sleeping. Belle loves to walk outside on a leash. Belle has a great personality, but a dominate personality and should really be an only.
*************************************************************************
February 24, 2012~Meet Belle, a beautiful 14 year old all white female kitty who was wronged in so many ways.
She was rescued by a good Samaritan. When Belle was found she was matted down to her skin, full of mites and fleas, very underweight and had severed dental issues. Belle was scanned and found to have a microchip which should have resulted in a happy ending but no one came for Bella and her contacts are unreachable.
This beautiful girl use to live on one side of the Hudson river and was found dumped on the other. I highly doubt Belle made the decision to swim the Hudson herself.
Belle has since been diagnosed with Feline Diabetes, spayed, is up to date on all of her vaccines, tested negative for Fiv/Felv and had a full dental resulting in 10 extractions leaving this beauty with one single tooth standing alone. She is currently not getting along with any other cats at all but this may be due to the stress of being in a cage and afraid.
Belle is not doing well in her cage at the vet's office. She has already survived 3 put to sleep deadlines please do not let her get to another one. Let us show Belle humans are not heartless and she is not disposable. She is a fighter and will make someone a wonderful companion.

Skeeter--Fly Free, Kitty
May 12, 2012--On April 27, 2012, Skeeter died at an emergency hospital in the arms of her new Mom. The ER vet suspected that the travel may have exacerbated cardiac disease secondary to her hyperthyroid. She also had acute kidney failure. We at DCIN feel that even if Skeeter had not traveled to her new Mom, these conditions would eventually have overtaken her frail body.
Fly free, beautiful Skeeter. Your body was too weak for this planet. We all miss you, but Jen the most,. She gave you such love and care in your final few weeks. We know Jen will be among those you wait for at the Bridge. ~Venita
**********************************************************************************************************
April 25, 2012--Skeeter is now at the Boston airport waiting for her flight to Houston. She will have a second flight this afternoon to reach her new home. Safe flights, baby girl.
****************************************************************************************************
April 20, 2012--In a comment, Monica asked for an update on Skeeter. Skeeter is now well enough to travel to her new home in the Southern US. Her flight will be sometime in the next 10 days. We wish Skeeter a huge WELCOME HOME!! Jen fell in love with Skeeter and will miss her terribly. ~Venita
****************************************************************************************************************
April 1, 2012--It's been a thrilling couple of weeks for Jen, foster Mom to Skeeter. Skeeter has continued to have vague medical symptoms and told an animal communicator that she was still trying to decide whether she wants to live. But Skeeter enjoys Jen as much as Jen enjoys her.
Skeeter seems to have finally turned a corner. She is starting to gain some weight and to exercise more. And even though she didn't win the Mega ball lottery, she is starting to truly appreciate the good life!
****************************************************************************
March 13, 2012--Skeeter was in the ER the weekend and then all day to her local vet yesterday because she is running a fever. 104 to 105 degrees. So far the treatments have been SubQ fluids and cold washcloths to cool her down. The local vet sent her home on Prednisolone because he believes it might be an inflammatory process. He drew blood for a chem panel and a CBC, and we will know this morning whether there is an infection or problems with internal organs. If there is an infection, she will start ABx. She is tentatively scheduled on Thursday for an abdominal ultrasound to see what is going on in there.
Jen also has stopped treating Skeeter with the Tapazole (for HyperT).
However, this morning foster Mom Jen tells me that she thinks Skeeter's fever is almost gone. Her ears are cold and she greeted Jen at the door with lots of meows just like usual.
These treatments have brought her vet bills to $1,000. If she has to have an ultrasound, that will be another $400.
Thank you so much to all the generous people who have been donating, and special thanks to all who have been sending her get well wishes.

March 9, 2012--Skeeter gets a catnip fix.
*********************************************************************************
March 8, 2012--Skeeter went to the vet on March 5. The results:
****************************************************************************
March 6, 2012--DCIN pulled Kitty from her original home. Jen, the woman who is fostering Luna for DCIN, picked Kitty up from her original home on Sunday, March 4.
Jen has given Kitty the wonderful new name of Skeeter, from the book/movie The Help.
DCIN planned to send Kitty to a long-term foster home in the lower Midwest later this week.
When Skeeter first got to Jen's house, after the owner gave Skeeter an insulin shot that morning, Skeeter's BG started going so low that foster Mom Jen and her partner Randy had to take Skeeter to the ER. She was released from ER care the same night, but once she got home her BG levels still were in the hypo level. By morning, Skeeter was in the 220s and we all agreed no more insulin for a couple of days.
Last night, March 5, Skeeter went to her local vet for a full workup. Skeeter looks so emaciated that the vet tech asked whether she was a stray. So sad. The vet says Skeeter is not well enough to travel, so Jen will be keeping her as long as it takes to get her well enough to travel. Proper nutrition and love goes a long way to bringing a cat back to health.
Jen has sent DCIN many photos, several of which we included here. Jen also posted these videos.
\
If someone would like to adopt Skeeter before she moves by air cargo to the lower Midwest, DCIN can certainly work on that. Just contact Skeeter's case manager at Venita@dcin.info.
DCIN had quite a bit of vetting done between the ER vet and the local vet. Almost $600. If you would like to contribute toward that cost, please chip-in below.

February 24, 2012--Kitty is at home with her Dad and her Dad's 3YO son. Mom has already moved out of state and diabetic Kitty cannot go with them. She will be surrendered to a kill shelter that we already know would destroy her.
Kitty's folks are not giving her up because she is diabetic. They are giving her up because the Mom developed a rare medical condition that makes her allergic to many allergens, including cats. In fact, the household has a second, non-diabetic cat that will face the same fate if a new home can't be found.
Kitty is an 11 to 13 YO, medium hair, indoor, spayed female tortie. She has lived for three years with another cat. Relations were cold (no fighting, just keeping distance) for about two years, but now they have worked out her differences. Kitty has lived with dogs, and we are trying to get information about how she did with them. Kitty does grandly with children. I was told she likes to watch TV. From the Mom:
Kitty has no current clinical symptoms of diabetes. In the past, PD and weight loss; that is why she went to the vet that diagnosed her. She has not yet put back on all of her lost weight. Kitty is currently eating a combo of dry foods--Meow Mix hairball control and a Friskees product.
Mom and Dad say that Kitty has no health problems other than diabetes, but Kitty hasn't been to the vet for a regular check-up. She's middle aged, and we know that middle-aged diabetic kitties often need a dental procedure. Kitty will occasionally poop right next to a clean litter box. DCIN will have Kitty tested for FIV/FeLV and get her vaccinations up-to-date before she travels to a foster or permanent home. Email her case manager at Venita@dcin.info.

This cat has been my beloved companion since I was a teenager. She used to curl up over my head like a nice fluffy hat while I slept, she graciously accepted being kicked out of my bedroom permanently when I got pregnant, she refused to harm my baby in any way no matter how hard he pulled on her tail, and she's always been so affectionate (purrrr; rubs against leg).Kitty was diagnosed diabetic less than a year ago. She has no history of DKA, but she has had two hypo events. The Dad, a diabetic himself, said that she had a glassy-eyed appearance and he treated at home with corn syrup. The Dad shares his Lantus with Kitty and she is getting 2.5U BID. She is not being home-tested because the Dad doesn't have extra strips, but DCIN will be helping by sending the Dad a glucometer, strips, and lancets just for Kitty.

Yuri Stays Home!!
April 5, 2013--New photos of Yuri
November 13, 2012--We have received the very best news on the planet for Yuri. He is going to stay home with his Mom. She has a new living situation and he now has a stable place with lots of support for Yuri's diabetes. We smile at this news and wish Mom and Yuri all the best as they continue down the path to forever together. There's no place like with Mom! ~Venita

June 12, 2012--Yuri loves to be in the thick of the action. A few weeks ago the shelving in his Mom's closet collapsed - oh no! At least Yuri was there to help her clean out her closet for the re-installation. The second she pulled the drawers out of the dresser to move it out, he hopped inside for the ride! The room turned into a playground - hours filled with fun as he explored all the closet items out around the room.
**********************************************************************************
June 2, 2012-- Take a lesson from big orange - stop and smell the roses! Yuri's Mom brought home some flowers from a work event and Yuri took the opportunity to enjoy them. After a few minutes of smelling he got a little more adventurous and tried to take a taste ;)
****************************************************************************************************
April 28, 2012--Please excuse my typing, but I am doing it with a 17+ lb cat on my lap that is resting his head on my right arm, purring away. LOL, now he is head butting my face.
The cat is Yuri. I had hoped to adopt Yuri, but my orinch Casey said no. Casey was once attacked by a pair of foster cats, so he is not very welcoming to other adult cats. (Well, he wasn't very welcoming to my one-eyed baby Jackson either.)
How do I describe Yuri? The first impression is that he is a big boy. He doesn't wear his 17 lbs well. He could stand to lose 2-3 lbs and although I've been trying, there has been no weight loss yet. Yuri loves to eat, and on rare occasions, he convinces me to give him a bit more than the 6 oz of low-carb Fancy Feast I have been trying to hold him to every day. Yuri's love to eat is a problem here because I leave wet food out for my cats 24/7. (It's a hangover from having to feed Ennis, my diabetic that is now recently gone, every two hours, day and night.)
Yuri loves people. He head butts, and lap rubs, and naps on my husband's chest in the afternoon. When I sleep in the foster room with him, he is a major-league cuddle sleeper, pushing himself against my belly and snuggling my neck. Around 4am, he wakes me with love, but I can't say whether it is "love-love" or "food love."
He is a very active boy for his age. He has a favorite shoestring he plays with, and he also often visits Jackson's toy baskets, which are scattered throughout the house. Yuri had a disagreement one day with Jackson about which would be playing with the Nanner. If I hadn't intervened, I think Yuri would have won.
Yuri seems to be a committed diabetic. With work, one can keep his blood glucose levels below 180 (the renal threshold). If one lets him go without insulin, he can get to the high 300s or low 400w mg/dl. He has just had a dental so his breath and drool (yes he drools with petting) are no longer stinky. The vet extracted Yuri's two upper canines and two lower premolars. (There is nothing left to hold his tongue tip in his mouth.) The vet said that some of Yuri's lower molars may have to go within a few years. But that is not unusual with a diabetic.
Yuri is an awesome cat. But, he is used to being an only cat. He got along fairly well with Spa Venita's recreation director Jackson. The difference in their size (17lbs v. 7 lbs) made wrestling time a bit rough for Jackson's taste. It is completely Casey's and my fault that we cannot adopt Yuri. Casey has the previous trauma, and I don't have the time or ability to make a proper introduction of Yuri to my crew.
But when Yuri and I are alone, as we are right now, he is a perfect cat. He loves to lay on my desk under the task lamps. Right now he is laying on the other office chair, head down, tongue out, and quietly snoring. What do you expect? It's 6am, the time when nocturnal animals start sleeping soundly and the birds start chirping. ~Venita
***********************************************************************************************************
February 22, 2012: Located in New Jersey and after many years of love and support given to Yuri by his caregiver, sadly he needs a new home and his caregiver because of the amount of travel her job requires.
He's a handsome gentleman with a big frame weighing about 17 pounds. Diagnosed in July of 2009, he has no history of ketones but did have a hypoglycemic episode this month while the caretaker was traveling. He was on 2.5 Units of Levemir BID but the current dose is 1 Unit due to the hypo. He eats canned only for the past two years and has been home tested and does not mind the testing. He is in need of dental and DCIN is working on getting that done.
Mom says: Yuri is an extremely loving and sociable cat. He has been around all sorts of people his whole life and takes no time at all to get accustomed to new people and places. Since the owner moved around almost yearly, over the course of his life Yuri has lived with his owner in ~10 different homes. Each new home had several roommates or family members living there, so he is quite accustomed to changing faces. All former roommates of Yuri will vouch that he is quick to give his love and virtually always gets the same love in return! He doesn't hesitate to climb into your lap as you relax and watch TV or read a book, and will cuddle up with you on the couch whenever he gets the chance. Yuri usually sleeps with his owner in bed. When she isn't home, he sleeps in the bathroom in a little cat bed for the night so he doesn't wake up his other roommates. When he goes to the vet he is relatively calm. Once he is let out of his carrying cage, he immediately begins exploring, and doesn't fight when the vet has to pick him up.

Over the course of Yuri’s life he has lived with several other cats and has had limited contact with dogs and children. Yuri has always gotten along with other cats, always the one to approach and play. I have found that the female cats he has lived with tend to be more hesitant to play with him, but they have had no problem cuddling up on the same bed or couch with him after they got used to one another. On the other hand, the male cats who Yuri has lived with have become immediate best friends – cuddling and licking one another like brothers! He has been noticeably defensive when he has encountered dogs, but he has never gotten the chance to cohabitate with one for an extended period of time, so I can’t speak to that. He has interacted with children with no problem (toddler age and above), but only on a limited basis.
Yuri is truly a special cat – he is absolutely adored by all who meet him, and the love he is capable of giving is truly astonishing. He taught himself to play fetch with bouncy balls and his favorite string (which he has unconditionally been attached to for four years!). He is truly a fantastic companion.

Fly Free Klinger
Rest peacefully, dear Klinger. |
Goodbye Sweet Klinger
We love you so much.
Our boy.
Our best friend.
Our heart.
Fly free Klinger. I can't tell you how much you'll be missed. We learned
so much from you and everyone here and on FB Acro.
Thank you for being ours.
Love always,
Marcy, Craig, and Radar
************************************************************************************************
March 26, 2012--Thank you all for donating for Klinger's care and praying for his recovery. DCIN has just sent a check to the credit card company for the $620 we raised for his ER care.
Since his cardiac event, the miracle kitty Klinger has gotten some vision back. He also was tested for Acromegaly, and his test came back above the reference range. Marcy tells us that she had Klinger tested because of the recommendations of some of the Acro-Moms. "Acromegaly can be a secondary diagnosis with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). The list of causes for HCM in adult cats is pretty short ("causes- excess cathecholamines, hyperthyroidism, acromegaly, hypertension")."
*******************************************************************************
January 19, 2012, evening--Marcy's report:
Klinger has been improving all day. He's eating, his liver values, potassium, and ketones are all in the normal range. His last BG was 225. He's growling and fighting with the vet techs - which is his normal behavior. He has an appt with the cardiologist tomorrow morning and then I think we might be able to take him home. The chip-in and PayPal donate buttons to help with Klinger's hospitalization are below.
We couldn't have gotten through this devastating time without you...thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! The power of prayer is an amazing thing. Klinger has a long road ahead of him and we continue to ask for your prayers.

January 19, 2012, afternoon--The latest from Marcy--
Thank you so much for keeping Klinger in your prayers. We just got back from visiting him. They moved him out of the oxygen cage. His blood pressure is normal. His potassium was a little high, so they removed that from the intravenous fluids he's receiving. His liver value is elevated, but she's pretty sure it will come down soon. He ate the smelts and shrimp we brought him. He was pretty growly with us, but he usually is at the vet, so we weren't discouraged. He has an appt with the cardiologist tomorrow morning. The chip-in and PayPal donate buttons are below.
They called us yesterday when they were still trying to revive him. He was gone for 10 minutes...10 minutes is a heck of a long time. We were there and saw him at his worst - it was scary and I won't go into detail here...I still picture him like that when I close my eyes. Anyway, he looked awesome today compared to yesterday. Here he is in his non-oxygen "room"
Klinger off oxygen.
He still needs your prayers, love, and support. We still can't thank you all enough.
*************************************************************************
February 19, 2011--Klinger went in for a dental yesterday and during the procedure went into Cardiac Arrest. The vet was able to be revive Klinger, but he still is in very critical condition. He is now in ICU and is experiencing the following concerns:
- 90-100% oxygenation with O2 support - he's in an oxygen cage in ICU.
- Blood glucose is in the 400s - gave R to bring him down, will continue to monitor BGs
- He's blind
- He's not ambulatory - can't stand on his own
- He has moderate ketones
- The vet needs to continue to monitor EKG
The first 24 hours are critical in his recovery, but the vet did say his blood work looked good for a cat that had survived a cardiac arrest. According to the vet, maybe one percent of cats are able to be brought back from cardiac arrest.
DCIN has created a chip-in to help Klinger. In addition, I will call the ER to see whether we can get Marcy a rescue discount.
I've been told that the chip-in site has a problem with its security certificate. In case you get that warning and do not want to use the chip-in, please use the PayPal donation button below. You end up in the same place, but your donation will not be added to the chip-in total.
Donate through PayPal for Klinger in ICU.

Chewy has a Home and Heart
***********************************************************************************
August 21, 2012: Chewy continues to improve and is loving his new life.
His mom writes "I woke up this morning with Chewy laying by my side and I just wanted to Thank You for saving him!...I really LOVE Chewy—he is a Wonderful Cat!"
We are so happy that both Chewy and Kim found each other and we look forward to many more updates.
********************************************************************************
April 23, 2012--DCIN is thrilled to announce that Chewy has found a furever home and heart, and he didn't have to go far to find it. Kim has signed the adoption papers and has told Chewy that he is home. Chewy yelled YES.
A beautiful boy on his Gotcha Day!! |
Yes, I'm Home!! |
April 7, 2012 --DCIN is very excited to congratulate Chewy and his foster mom, Kim. It has been over 2 weeks since Chewy received insulin. It appears he is now OTJ!!
***********************************************************************************
I get here myself! |
***********************************************************************************
February 20, 2012--From Kim, Chewy's foster Mom:
Chewy is doing Great! In the shelter papers, his previous owner said he could not jump. I assumed that was true due to some neuropathy. I let Chewy stay in my bedroom last night.....I woke up at midnight to give Kitty her midshot and he was running around with a catnip mouse in his mouth!*****************************************************************************
Since he "supposedly" couldn't jump, I put a bed on the floor for him. WELL, this morning, I woke up to a big purring boy laying beside me on the bed!!! So much for not being able to jump--maybe he was just avoiding his owners! Chewy is a GREAT cat--cute personality and purrs constantly! I am trying VERY hard not to fall for him!
February 18, 2012--Chewy is from Wake County NC Animal Care, as were three other diabetic cats--Sweet Potato, Jaspar, and Molly (GA).
A rough looking boy. |
We are learning the ropes with Wake County. The shelter's outreach coordinator calls DCIN, DCIN and the shelter work to find a local rescue who will foster the cat, DCIN provides insulin, testing supplies, and education if needed, and we adopt out the cat to an excellent home and heart.
Chewy was an owner surrender. We don't know much about him yet. He's a big boy, said to be a Maine Coon Mix. He tested negative for FIV/FeLV, and received his rabies and FVRCP vaccinations before he left the shelter. He is now fostering in a private home an hour southeast of Raleigh NC.
Kim, a DCIN friend who went to the shelter to evaluate Chewy says he looks "rough." The photos she took for us support that. He started ProZinc insulin last night. His blood glucose levels have already been reduced--into the mid 200s--simply from the change to all-wet food that the shelter made.
Chewy can only stay in his local foster home for two weeks. Because we wish to find him a permanent home and heart before the end of his stay there, we are listing him as 911. Although we have a back-up foster, she is in another state and that would require a transport. We prefer to move Chewy only once.
Chewy is going to be a beautiful, big, fluffy boy once his diabetes gets regulated and we get him groomed, including getting all his mats out. If you have a place in your home and heart for Chewy, please contact his case manager, Jennifer, at Jennifer@dcin.info.

Malachi - passed to Rainbow Bridge
March 8: 2012: Currently on 2 units BID of PZI.
February 28, 2012: Malachi has until May, that's the deadline given by a family member.
************************************************************************************
February 18, 2012: More information from Malachi's person.
Mal is actually pretty lazy! He doesn't care about cat nip or small toys. He likes to chase long toys, like felt fish on a string. When I go in the bathroom and close the door, he pokes his foot around under the door, and I playfully grab at him, and we do this repeatedly. He thinks this is great fun. Speaking of him being lazy, once there was a mouse in the lower level and we chased it into my son's bathroom and it ran into the walkin shower. We put Mally in there and stood on a barstool to look over the top. He didn't even catch the mouse in a 4 x 4 shower! The mouse didn't really interest him much and that is back when he was fat.
The food he eats is from Pet Smart and is a dry food with high protein called Wilderness.
He is currently on 2 units of PZI, increased from 1 unit starting dose.
February 17, 2012: Diagnosed around December of last year, sweet Malachi, a wonderful young man in Kalamazoo, MI needs a home quickly. He is altered, weighs about 10 pounds, down from 20 pounds earlier. An indoor/outdoor kitty but prefers to stay indoors. He's not a lap cat but does like to next to you on the couch and loves a good brushing.
Malachi does not live with other pets but there is a dog that comes to the house on occasion and they ignore each other. When outdoors there's another neighborhood kitty that he sits near, they are not best buds but they don't fight. He would probably do well with other cats in a household and he likes children.
When first diagnosed ketones were present when the vet checked him but since then they have not appeared. There is no history of hypoglycemic episodes.
His family loves him very much but due to medical reasons they cannot keep him and treating him is not easy because of the medical issues.

Cricket in Her Furever Home!!!
Miss Cricket and her Paws. |
"Miss cricket is doing very well, other than the kind of high numbers business. She has taken to licking my shins as a sign of love, ha. I really enjoy her off-beat personality."************************************************************************************************************
April 25, 2012~ These are the updates that I absolutely love to announce! Cricket is now in her furever home and heart. She has officially been adopted by her new mom Valerie. Cricket (originally named Baby) arrived in her new home on February 26, 2012. A few days later Valerie experienced a devistating loss as her own kitty Baby passed away in her arms. Valerie then viewed Cricket as being sent to her for a reason. She quickly gave Cricket the nickname of Honey Badger because she was aggressive, not very affectionate and quick to bring out the claws and teeth. Valerie remained patient and loving through it all. Cricket began her treatment of insulin and less than 2 months of hard work and dediction from her new mom shows her responding well to the insulin. She is seeing +60hour runs without insulin and in the past 7 days Cricket has not needed 10 if her 14 doses of insulin!
This beautiful photo of Valerie and Cricket shows just how good Cricket is feeling these days. She is allowing her new mom to snuggle right up to her and they are both receiving the love they deserve. Cricket still shows her fursiblings who is in charge with a quick swipe but she is fitting in nicely.
Welcome home sweet Cricket. You are in such loving arms ♥ ~Céline

April 16, 2012~ UPDATE
We have some new photos Cricket who is doing amazing in her foster home. What do you do when you have never had a diabetic cat before and are sent a foster kitty with so much cattitude that you nickname her Honey Badger? Well if you are Valerie you show her lots of patience, dedication and love. Then what happens...DCIN receives an update that looks like this
my little Crickety is making a run for normalcy. she is, more often than
not, suddenly running in normal range blood glucose levels all by herself. it
looks like her liver and pancreas have been jump-started by an all low-carb
canned food diet and the insulin treatment so far. i have hardly had to dose her
for days now! i can even pick her up now without getting mauled. :) i nuzzle her
belly and a few weeks ago i'd surely be looking to facial reconstructive
surgery ~Valerie
Turns out that Cricket may very well be a Cymric (long haired Manx). In the second photo we can see Cricket sharing her space with another kitty resident named Big....amazing progress! We love when diabetic kitties find their way into special homes and Cricket sure lucked out with her guardian angel Valerie. ~Céline

March 23/2012~ Cricket is still getting use to her new fur family but she is showing some of her nice personality to her new foster mom.
Valerie has given her the nickname of Honey Badger because some days are better than others. This girl really does need to be in charge and her moods change very, very quickly. Thankfully mom has the patience of a Saint and takes everything in stride.
Valerie continues to work hard at finding the right insulin dose for little Cricket. She is a very dedicated furmomma. I hope that Cricket realizes very quicklky just how much love she has for her. ~Céline

March 3, 2012--Baby (now named Cricket) moved to a DCIN foster home with Valerie last Sunday. Cricket has been settling in and detoxing from dry food. Valerie has been learning how to hometest a kitty with tortitude.
This morning was Cricket's first Lantus insulin shot. Unfortunately, Valerie made a mistake that sometimes happens with newbies. Instead of .75U she drew 7.5U. The hometesting showed her Cricket's numbers diving, and Cricket's behavior showed her something wasn't right. Valerie consulted with a vet tech friend and discovered the mistake. She took Cricket to the ER, where she is staying at least overnight.
I will soon talk to the ER vet and update if there is something unusual, but I expect to be told that Cricket is on a dextrose/glucose drip with her BG level being tested frequently. I also expect to hear that ER treatment is about $1,000/day. Hoping that Cricket will be OK to go home by the morning, I am opening a chip-in for one day's ER treatment. Please help if you can, and do send best wishes and prayers for Cricket. ~Venita (Chip-in widget removed.)

January 16, 2012--Baby is a gorgeous tortie Maine Coon who has had a rough life. She may look a little scruffy right now but we know there is a beautiful young lady under her scruffiness.
She was taken in by a very nice elderly man who is 88 but due to his own health conditions he cannot keep Baby. Baby was discarded by her previous owners and left to fend on her own. He took her in out of the goodness of his heart but now this girl needs a new home ASAP.
Baby was diagnosed with FD on Jan 13, 2012. Otherwise this girl is in good health. She does not have a medical background though. She is estimated to be approximately 5 years old and at this time her spay status is unknown.
Baby is at high risk because she is not being treated for her diabetes and she also needs to be out of this home ASAP. Do you have room to foster or adopt this girl? If so, please email celine@dcin.info
